Why do children run away or refuse to do things?

Do you have a child or young person who run’s away, shuts down or refuses to do things, maybe at home or at school? Do they try to ‘get away’ from the situation as a way of coping? If so, they are probably in flight mode, which is their brains survival response when things get hard.

This video explains what flight mode is and what you can do and say to help your child. As always, our videos focus on children who are struggling with adverse experiences, childhood trauma or who are dealing with high levels of stress. However, that said, all children can experience flight mode in response to an emotional situation.
